The colour of light is expressed in Kelvin (K). Essentially, we are talking about the colour temperature of a lamp.
How does colour temperature work?
With a high colour temperature, the light appears bluer and cooler, whereas with a low colour temperature, the light seems yellower and warmer.
Some tangible examples:
Candlelight: 1200 K
Sunrise: 2000 K
Sunrise after 1 hour: 3500 K
Daylight: 5000 K
Midday sun: 5700 K
Neutral white light: 6500 K
The colour temperature greatly influences the atmosphere in a room. Warm light has a calming effect, while blue light can increase concentration.
