The new energy label 2021 - How does it work now?

The energy label shows how efficiently lamps and other products, such as electrical appliances, use energy. The higher the energy efficiency class, the more energy and thus electricity is used by an electrical device. Since 1 September 2021, a new energy label has been introduced. In this blog, we explain what is now on the label and what to look out for.

Energy label renewed on 1 September 2021

According to the new energy labelling regulation (EU) 2019/2015 (abbreviated ELR) from 1 September 2021, almost all LED lamps, fluorescent lamps and energy-saving lamps have received a new energy label. The new scale runs from A (dark green) to G (red). The most efficient energy label is "A" and the least efficient is "G". This makes it extra easy to choose an energy-efficient lamp.

Until 1 September 2021, the label ran from A++ to E. The old scale did not provide good information because many products received the A++ label and this made it very unclear for people. Many lamps were already at the highest level. The transition to a new energy label does not mean that lamps will now become less energy efficient. The new label provides more room for even more efficient lamps.

To create space for new, very efficient lamps, the most efficient energy class (A) remains as empty as possible. Products that receive a label B, C or D are roughly comparable to the old A+ or A++ label. So you do not need to be alarmed if you have bought a lamp that only gets a D on the new scale. This product is certainly not less energy efficient. It is exactly the same; only the energy consumption is assessed more strictly and the product receives a lower energy class.
